Johnny Wu came to the Marilyn Monroe Theatre with a magic trick. He left the room with something closer to a confession.

Then turned it toward himself, the way someone reconsiders an old photograph.
At twenty-two, Johnny Wu had done what his parents had been dreaming about since before he was born.
He graduated.
Then he reached for a paper shredder.
That is how Johnny Wu, celebrity mentalist and keynote speaker, opened "Is Your Success Just an Illusion?", his TEDxBeverlyGrove 2026 talk built around a question most people spend their lives avoiding: who actually wrote the rules they are living by.
What followed was not a typical magic act. It was not a typical TEDx talk either. Wu, who has performed for Google, Netflix, Amazon, and Bvlgari and built a career on more than 2,000 five-star reviews, used the tools of his own craft against the craft itself. He is a magician. He knows illusions when he sees one. The talk argues that the most convincing illusion in the room was never on a stage.
The diploma was the first prop. It was not the last.
"We think we're making our own moves. But most of us are living by someone else's rule."
— Johnny Wu at TEDxBeverlyGrove 2026
Wu built the talk from his own life, beginning as a silent immigrant child in Toronto who found his first real connection watching a magic trick on a classroom television, and ending somewhere considerably more complicated than where most success stories choose to stop. Along the way, he describes a moment at a 2020 Google event that changed how he understood the word "success" entirely, a conversation with a woman who had done everything right and still could not explain why it felt like nothing.
By the end of the talk, the diploma is gone. What replaces it is something Wu built with his own hands, in front of the audience, out of the wreckage.
Johnny Wu's talk will be released online in the coming months as part of the TEDxBeverlyGrove 2026 speaker series.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
