Syd Stewart took the TEDxBeverlyGrove 2026 stage and said what too many rooms have been afraid to say out loud.

What happens when potential meets possibility in a young person the system underestimated?
Then she answered it in two words.
That is how Syd Stewart, founder and CEO of Better Youth, opened her TEDxBeverlyGrove 2026 talk, “Shift Happens”, a declaration delivered as spoken word at the Marilyn Monroe Theatre on March 14, 2026, under the theme “Reimagining the Possible.”
What followed was not a policy argument. Not a data presentation. Something rarer and harder to pull off on a stage built for ideas: a witness account. Delivered by someone who has spent nearly two decades in the room with the young people most systems gave up on.
Stewart’s talk makes a distinction that gets lost in most conversations about foster and system-impacted youth. The young people she knows are resourceful, creative, and capable of things that would surprise anyone who reduced them to their circumstances.
What they have been denied is not capacity.
It is invitation.
“They are not broken. The system is.”
— Syd Stewart at TEDxBeverlyGrove 2026
Stewart’s case for mentorship went beyond inspiration. She described a commitment that does not clap from a distance but walks into the work alongside a young person and stays.
The shift she described is not a program. It is not a policy. It is a decision made by individuals who refuse to confuse a young person’s current circumstance with their ultimate capacity.
Syd Stewart’s talk will be released online in the coming months as part of the TEDxBeverlyGrove 2026 speaker series.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
